Have you used Skype? Perhaps you are already using Skype or something similar to keep in touch with friends and family. But have you considered the sales and marketing potential of these services?
A video call can be most effective. Simply having the ability to meet face to face is quite powerful. But consider the greater advantages. On a video call, you can show a product almost as well as you could if you were in the same room. Skype also supports screen sharing, so you can demo software of show a Powerpoint or Keynote presentation.
So what do you need to do to get started? Simply download and install the Skype software from www.skype.com, and follow the instructions to set up a free account. Your customer will need to do the same. Get your customers user name, and set them up as a contact. Once they have accepted you, you can call them. Your call will be initiated in voice mode. You both need to click on the video camera button, and you will be video conferencing! Of course, your customer may already be a Skype user, so all you may need to do is get their user name!
A few things to keep in mind. Remember, your customer will see not only you, but the room behind you. If your office is a disaster area, you probably don’t want to show off the mess to your customer! Have a good look at your background, and adjust your camera angle if you don’t like what you see, or move to a conference room, or find a plain wall to use as a backdrop. If you wear glasses, you may need to adjust the camera angle to eliminate the reflection from your screen.
Ideally, you will want to make your call from a quiet room. A headset and boom mike, (or a Bluetooth headset if your computer supports it) will make your audio better . To ensure that your image is clear and of good quality, make sure that you are well lit. A small desk lamp behind and to the side of your camera can help.
Video conferencing is a powerful tool. You owe it to yourself to get familiar with the technology. Try it out.
