Perhaps the only reason you have a web site is that your company’s address, phone number and e-mail can be found with a Google search. Its the modern equivalent to being listed in the phone book or the yellow pages. If this is the case, you probably don’t need to spend much time updating your web site. Give your site a quick review to make sure that the information is current and up-to-date. Have a critical look at the layout to make sure it is sharp, modern and easy to read; and if all is well, forget about it. By the way, there is one change that I would make. If your site uses Flash animations, and you think your customers might want to access your site from a portable device like a Blackberry, iPhone or Android phone, get rid of the Flash! Flash renders poorly or not at all on most portable devices.
If you want more from your site, read on.
If your web site is a selling tool, change at least the home page on a regular basis. You want customers to check your page regularly for new content. If it looks the same every time they visit, they will soon stop coming back.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not suggesting a wholesale redesign of the page every month. Just make sure you add new content on a regular basis. Highlight a new product, or have a special of the month. You can even display one of several different images at random when the home page opens, so every customer visit is different. Consider adding a technical tip or a link to a technical article, or set up an automatic link to display the headline from the latest post on your blog.
By making your web site a hot-spot for current product and tech news, your customers will consider it a resource, and visit it regularly. Its a prime tool to keep your company name in front of your customers, and to ensure that they contact you when they need your products or services.
